St Margaret’s is a day school in Exeter which offers a ‘challenging and stimulating academic experience’ say Independent Schools’ Inspectors (ISI October 2006). It is a school for the good all rounder with energy and zest for life and the interest and curiosity to take advantage of every opportunity.
Academic achievement is consistently strong and girls of all abilities achieve success in public exams. The girls have achieved 100% pass rate at GCSE and A2 over the last four years and in 2006, 75% top grades A and B at A2 and 75% A*, A and B grades at GCSE.
Achievement in extra curricular activities is also outstanding. Outdoor pursuits thrive through Ten Tors, CCF and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award; there are several choirs, orchestras and other musical groups (one choir reached the finals of the BBC Radio 3 Choir of the Year competition); drama and art are areas of excellence. In school the clubs range from Russian to classics, netball to Science.
Pupils say that ‘your skills and qualities are as important here as your academic achievements’. This embodies the St Margaret’s ethos in which girls are encouraged to be themselves, ‘praise is given liberally for their achievements’ (ISI), and they know they are valued for themselves and for their unique combination of gifts and talents.
From September 2008 the school’s new Nursery (ages 3 -5) and Pre-Prep (Years 1 and 2) are admitting boys and girls. From Year 3 entrance assessments are used to inform teacher’s expectations of children. Entrance tests for the Senior School are held mainly in January each year. Entry to the Sixth Form is based on GCSE results and interview. Bursaries and scholarships are available.
If you wish your child to thrive in a strong, academic, encouraging, creative environment, St Margaret’s is a school to consider. Come and see us in action or at www.stmargarets-school.co.uk.
