Set in the heart of the beautiful Wiltshire countryside, Dauntsey's School has its own particular and unique atmosphere. Visitors constantly remark on the cheerful and friendly manner of the pupils, on the happy blend of informality with courtesy, of relaxed amiability with purposeful activity. The 2008 Good Schools Guide described us as "on the map big-time" and providing "friendly, down to earth, independent education with absolutely no snobbishness or arrogance. Fab."
Examinations support the claim of purposeful activity; 2007 produced record public examination results. At A-level, 84.6% of all entries achieved A or B grades. At GCSE, 75.1% of all entries were awarded an A or A* grade. The high level of attainment at GCSE was reflected in The Times table of leading co-educational independent schools, placing Dauntsey's in 12th position.
Dauntsey's is no mere academic hothouse, however. There have been numerous sporting successes from our full programme of games, as well as outstanding opportunities for challenge and adventure. The Mountaineering and Expedition Society in 2007 took the first organised school group to the kingdom of Bhutan; many take part in the DofE programme, with much more besides. Since 2000, the School's Sailing Club has competed in six Tall Ships' Races onboard the famous 56' gaff cutter, 'Jolie Brise'; in the summer of 2009 our pupils will sail her on the Tall Ships TransAtlantic Race.
Drama and Music are particularly strong, with an average of two concerts and over 560 musical instrument lessons a week! The high quality of the school productions (eg Les Miserables, Sweeney Todd, Witches of Eastwick) have earned the school a glowing reputation both locally, as well as further afield - pupils have even performed Les Miserables in the West End!
Boarding accommodation continues to increase. A new Senior girls’ boarding house opened in 2005, and existing senior and junior accommodation was refurbished in 2007. A state of the art Science Centre opened in 2004, and the school also boasts a 5-studio Art Department, an inspirational library and well equipped IT Centre.
But most striking, perhaps, is that atmosphere. Visitors are most welcome to come and sample it for themselves.
Junior boarders, aged 11-14, share the Manor House set in its own grounds of 100 acres and fully provided with its own catering facilities and golf course. There are some 70 junior boarders and whilst their home is at the Manor, lessons take place in the Main School. New pupils can therefore familiarise themselves with the School before moving into the senior boarding houses. There is a strong staff presence at the Manor with a residential Housemaster, Matron and four resident tutors, male and female.
